Boys Basketball Graduating Class 2020-21

Though the basketball team was not able to play a season in 2020-21, North Toronto C.I. thanks the graduating student-athletes for their contributions to the program. These seven players improved every year from Grade 9 to 12 and always played hard, played smart and played together.

2019-20 Senior Girls Basketball Team Award Winners

Ciara Boys was named Most Valuable Player of the 2019-20 N.T.C.I. Senior Girls Basketball Team. Ciara started every game and was the team’s leading scorer. At the defensive end, Ciara guarded every position on the floor. Ciara was named a Tournament All-Star at the Earl Haig/Nan Copp Senior Girls Tournament and helped the team to a third place finish.

Defensive Player of the Year: Kiara played hard every game and never hesitated to put her body on the line. A memorable highlight was a game at Central Toronto Academy where she took three charges in the fourth quarter while playing with four fouls.

Most Improved Player: Jasmine Lem earned the Most Improved Player Award. A Grade 10 Point Guard, she played tenaciously. Jasmine did an exceptional job of applying her footwork so that she could finish in the paint and took pride in disrupting the opponent’s ballhandlers.

Teammate of the Year: Kaura Sankaran was awarded the Teammate of the Year Award. Kaura is an exemplary student-athlete who leads by example and is always happy to be in the gym. The team benefitted from Kaura’s defense and shooting.

Character Award: Cassandra Chicora played four years for the Varsity Girls Basketball team and won the North Toronto Character Award. Cassandra played multiple sports at North Toronto and also excelled in the classroom.

Rookie of the Year: Serena Hobbs made the Varsity team as a Grade 9 student and proved to be an intimidating presence inside. The team relied on her rebounding and shot-blocking ability. Serena showed the ability to score inside and put the ball on the court to create her shot from the wing.

2019-20 Junior Boys Basketball Award Winners

Most Valuable Player: Cameron Ollerhead was named M.V.P. of the 2019-20 Junior Boys Basketball Team. Cameron was the team’s leading scorer and served as Team Captain. Cameron and catch and shoot and create his shot off the dribble, in addition to playing active defense. Cameron was also a member of the Senior Boys Basketball Team that won the Earl Haigh Tournament in January 2020.

Character Award: Alon Rotem earned the North Toronto Character Award. Alon is always in the gym or weight room trying to improve. He studies the sport intently and his game has benefitted from his dedication. Alon also encourages his teammates and organizes off-season training.

2019-20 Senior Boys Basketball Team Award Winners

Marc Goldthorp was named Most Valuable Player of the 2019-20 N.T.C.I. Senior Boys Basketball Team. Marc was an anchor at both ends of the floor, averaging 14.1 points per game and serving as Team Captain. He played Varsity Basketball for four years at North Toronto. Marc’s leadership played a major role in the teams 22-11 record.

Defensive Player of the Year: Ethan Hum was an excellent on-ball defender and set a tone for the team’s pressure defense throughout the year. Ethan started twenty-two games as a guard and although he averaged only five points per game made a significant impact with his defense and rebounding.

Most Improved Player: Tyler Yan improved significantly over the off-season. Tyler recovered from a broken nose suffered during the 2018-29 Junior Boys season and worked extensively on his shooting throughout the summer. Tyler started at point guard, averaged 10.4 points per game and played tenacious defense.

Teammate of the Year: Noah Rudin was selected Teammate of the Year. He would always give energy to others and was the first to pick a teammate off the floor. Noah earned the respect of all team members because of his ceaseless work ethic in practice.

Character Award: Elliott Ollerhead won the North Toronto Character Award for his strong work on the court and in the classroom. Elliott won the Grade 12 International Business Award and was a tournament All-Star the the Silverthorn Invitational Tournament. Elliott averaged 9.6 points over thirty-one games and organized many preseason workouts,

Senior Night Boys Basketball Senior Night 2020

Congratulations to the four Grade 12 members of the 2019-20 Senior Boys Basketball team who will play their final league game at home this week. North Toronto plays Parkdale C.I. on Tuesday February 11th at 4:15pm.

Senior Boys Basketball Team Wins Earl Haig Championship

The Senior Boys Basketball Team captured the 2020 Earl Haig Tournament with a 69-58 win over West Humber Collegiate on Friday. John Guven led all scorers with twenty-four points and Nathan Kerr added twenty-one, including ten during a key fourth quarter run. North Toronto trailed 21-14 after one quarter but turned up the defensive intensity.
